Jan Groenhart spent his childhood surrounded by the seemingly endless Dutch costal landscape, fascinated by the effect of the natural light and changing seasons. As an artist, he strives to capture this intense light and colour which, though based in reality, can feel almost magically surreal.
Born in 1952, Groenhart studied painting at the Rietveld Academy, where he learned to assign meaning to colour and to paint freely, preferring watercolour paints. It was a year long trip to South American which steered him towards oil paints and the striking, abstract landscape style shown above in “Spring”.
At Buro Art, we particularly enjoy Groenhart’s vibrant use of colour; his attention to light and shade create a playful and joy filled atmosphere, bringing with them a sense of calm and space for your mind to wonder.
